Two end of life announcements meet at the same point: signing in on the mobile device

An administrator opens the list of systems that have to be dealt with before the turn of the year. Two lines are certain. Acronis is discontinuing Cyber Files. Microsoft has announced the end of NTLM. The third line stays empty: which devices and services in the organisation still run on the old authentication method.

NTLM stands for NT LAN Manager, the method Windows systems have used to identify themselves to each other since the nineties. Microsoft is ending support because attackers can intercept the authentication credential and reuse it without knowing the password. NTLMv1 has been removed from Windows 11 version 24H2 and Windows Server 2025. For October 2026 Microsoft has announced that it will block the use of NTLMv1 derived credentials by default, and expressly calls that date provisional.

Acronis Cyber Files ends at the end of the year. In many organisations this software carries access to file storage from the corporate phone.

An end of life announcement with a date is not a security problem. An unknown estate is.
